One of the BIGGEST keys to making connections is
listening. This is one habit that will help you be the friend/coworker/consultant that the world needs.
Try this when someone shares with you: As they
are speaking, your brain will automatically bring to mind things to say that
relate to their story. When this starts to happen, tell yourself that you are
NOT going to verbally make that connection once their lips stop moving. This
will help you refocus on what they are saying.
To let them know you heard them, ask them a question. For example, instead of saying, "Oh wow my uncle went through that same experience," ask, "How have you been doing since all of that happened?"
In summary
- Listen.
- Tell yourself not to "add on" once they've
stopped talking.
- Ask them a question about what they've shared.
