I heard someone make a great point regarding meetings this week. He said that you can arrange most meetings using the same four questions.

1. What's going right?

2. What's going wrong?

3. What's confusing?

4. What's missing?

Manage Expectations = Be Kind to Yourself

This week, I had the chance to meet 10+ CEOs and Directors within the Ardent Health Services family. The conversations were encouraging, enlightening and challenging.

Jim Kaltenbacher, CEO of Utica Park and OHI clinics said one thing that stood out. He said, “Two years. It’ll take at least two years to understand the ins and outs of this system.”  As a new employee, that was so helpful.

I will definitely hit the ground running, but envisioning a longer ramp is a way of showing myself kindness. There’s a lot to learn. Thank you, Jim, for acknowledging this and setting realistic expectations.

Happy National Radio Day

People are usually surprised to hear that I enjoy sports radio. However, if I am not listening to a book in the car, I'm typically tuned in to WWLS The Sports Animal.

For me, I'm drawn to the personalities and the innumerable stories that are present in sports. Rivalry is celebrated in sports, but listening to sports radio has given me a greater appreciation and respect for various teams, coaches and players.

Congratulations, Ardent Team!

How to Be a Better Listener

One of the BIGGEST keys to making connections is listening. This is one habit that will help you be the friend/coworker/consultant that the world needs.

Try this when someone shares with you: As they are speaking, your brain will automatically bring to mind things to say that relate to their story. When this starts to happen, tell yourself that you are NOT going to verbally make that connection once their lips stop moving. This will help you refocus on what they are saying.

To let them know you heard them, ask them a question. For example, instead of saying, "Oh wow my uncle went through that same experience," ask, "How have you been doing since all of that happened?"

In summary

  • Listen.
  • Tell yourself not to "add on" once they've stopped talking.
  • Ask them a question about what they've shared.
